Advanced Classes

Extreme Scenting

This is when it really starts to get exciting with Scenting! All searches are in different locations. This class will focus on developing handler skills through more complex searches at both inside and outside locations. You must bring your own crate to scenting locations. Prerequisite is passage of ORT on Birch or instructor approval. Dogs come to all classes. $150 for six week series.

Family Dog IV

An advanced-level class for graduates of FDIII or equivalent, offered quarterly. We continue distance work, both inside and outside, and work for both speed and reliability. Contains MHS Good Citizen Test (GCT) elements. $150 for 6 week series.

Family Dog V

An advanced-level class for graduates of FD IV or equivalent, offered twice-a-year. Our goal is to work our dogs reliably off leash, doing all the exercises previously learned. Weather permitting, this class is mostly outside, where distractions are highest. $150 for a six-class series. (Pavilion)

MHS Good Citizen Test

The Marin Humane Society offers a Good Citizen Test for dogs once each quarter, and presents each passing dog/handler team with a Certificate of Accomplishment. Pre-registration and a $20 fee are required to reserve a spot for your dog to take the test. (Pavilion)

Scenting Run Throughs

Practice your scentwork on indoor and outdoor search fields with blind hides, obstacles and elevation; outdoor work will include long-line management. Instructors will assist with odor pairing, alerts and handling as necessary; search difficulty can be adjusted based on dog/handler team skill. Dogs need to be crate trained. The dog should be odor obedient, having passed the class ORT or have instructor approval. $15 per class, pre-registration is required.

SHARE a Book With Your Dog

SHARE a Book With Your Dog - This class is designed to prepare you and your dog to be a part of the SHARE a Book Program. This unique program allows children to read to dogs as a way to improve their reading skills. The class teaches specific skills to enable your dog to not only support young readers but also be an integral part of the reading experience. Dogs must be dog & kid friendly and be graduates of the Your Dog to SHARE class. $100 for the series. (Auditorium)

Trail Masters

Take your "trail manners" to the next level with our new Trail Masters class! We will meet for an hour and a half each week to enjoy some of the "dogs allowed" Open Space trails in Marin County. This will be a trainer coached hike on some of the more interesting and challenging terrain in the county. Open to dog friendly graduates of Trail Manners,Town & Trail,Street Smarts, or with instructor approval. $175 for five week session.

Your Dog to SHARE

Graduates of FDIII or equivalent. Think your dog would be a good Therapy dog? Would you like to share your dog with a variety of people in different settings? This class is designed to prepare you & your dog to become a SHARE animal assisted therapy team. Includes the MHS Good Citizen test on the last Tuesday of class. Graduation location and date will be announced during the first class meeting. FIRST CLASS IS MANDATORY AND FOR PEOPLE ONLY, NO DOGS, PLEASE! $180 for the series.
