The story of Hannah
(aka Hannah Banana, Hannah Montana)
My name is Hannah and this is my story. I was adopted on December 23, 2007 by the Kelly Family from the Marin Humane Society.
Denise (the mom of the family) had been looking to adopt a second dog into the Kelly family for several months. The family already has a miniature pinscher named Jack Jack who is 2.5 years old, and Denise wanted a playmate for Jack Jack, so the search began.
Over the months Denise searched and searched. She searched on Petfinder.com and visited several shelters, but she did not find the right dog. She then saw me on Petfinder.com and thought about it for 3 days. She called the Marin shelter and was told that I was available. Denise asked about why I was there and was told the following: I lived with 1 person and then I was given to this person’s sister. I had lived with children ages 4 and 7, with other dogs and a cat in an apartment. I was then given to the shelter because I was not potty trained and I barked too much. My neighbors in the apartment were complaining about me! I was surrendered to the shelter by my second owner on November 6, 2007.
On December 23rd, Denise told her family that they were going to the Marin shelter to look at me, so Ryan (7), Katie (10), Sean (dad) and Jack Jack (2.5 years miniature pinscher) took off in the car and headed out to see me.
Denise, Katie and Ryan went to my kennel and I wagged my tail and gave kisses through the bars. A shelter volunteer took me to the meet and greet area so I could run around and meet my potential new owners. I immediately jumped up and gave tons of kisses! After spending a few minutes with these people, they brought in the dad and Jack Jack. Oh boy, a playmate! I followed him around and what does he do, ignores me! But I can’t blame Jack Jack, there are tons of other dog scents in the play area. (At least he didn’t seem to mind that I was following him around).
Well, Denise knew within 5 minutes that I was the one for her family. All family members voted and they wanted me! So Denise went inside to fill out the paperwork while I stayed outside and continued to play.
Denise told me the following about the conversation she had with the shelter volunteer: Denise asked why no one had adopted me sooner, that small dogs usually go really fast. The shelter volunteer said that since I was not potty trained and barked, that probably turned people off, that they would not want to have to “train” me. So the volunteer gave Denise all the information she had on me. I was updated on all my shots and was recently spayed. I had a clean bill of health. Denise signed all the paperwork and paid the adoption fee. She even went to the pet store inside the shelter where I got a new dog bed, bowl, bones, treats, squeaky toys and a collar!
I was then loaded in the car with the family and Jack Jack for the hour ride home. I was so excited and nervous that I threw up in the car, but I was lucky no one made a fuss. (Though the kids were grossed out, since I threw up on them) Denise told me that Jack Jack had done the same thing when they picked him up to bring home.
Oh boy, a new house! Once inside I was sooooo excited I ran all over the place! I could not believe my good fortune!
Here is Denise’s side of the story:
Our family could not be happier! I am thankful the other family surrendered Hannah to the Marin shelter, their loss is our gain. I believe that everything happens for a reason and this is very true with Hannah.
We have a dog door which Jack Jack uses to go in and out at will. Well, it took only a few times and Hannah followed Jack Jack’s lead. During the day when we are not home, they have a small area which is penned in with their food, water, beds and toys. The dog door is in this area so they have access to go in and out at will. We have a large backyard so they can play all day.
So much for Hannah not being potty trained - she is doing just fine. She has only had a few accidents since we brought her home. With regards to barking, this does not seem to be a problem either.
Hannah was meant for us to adopt her. She fits in perfectly with our family. She has chosen Ryan as her favorite as she spent the first day just sitting on his lap. Hannah and Jack Jack chase each other, play tug of war and sleep next to each other on their couch by the fireplace. When dad sits in his recliner, Jack Jack sits on top of his shoulder and Hannah lies on his lap. Jack Jack loves to go to Home Depot and Starbucks with Sean. I guess that he will now have to take both of them!
