Intermediate Classes

Bull Breed Advanced

(SPECIAL BREED CLASS)Intermediate obedience that also addresses specific training and behavior modification needs. Much of the class will be conducted outdoors on the MHS campus for a more realistic training environment. Relevant breeds and breed mixes are: Boxers, Bulldogs, Pit Bulls, Staffordshire terriers, Rottweilers and Mastiffs. Pre-requisite Bull Breed Basics, Consult or Instructor referral. Community K9 Good Citizen

Practice and assess your dog's good manners out in the real world. The Marin Humane Society's Good Citizen skills will be taught and assessed throughout the classes which are held in two different off site locations. Those dogs showing the appropriate proficiency and mastery of the requisite exercises will receive their official MHS Good Citizen award certificate. Pre-requisite FD2. Dog friendly dogs only, please. $100 for four week class.

Family Dog II

Graduates of FD1 or equivalent. Hone the skills learned in Family Dog I through a variety of exercises that solidify your dog's good manners and focus on you in distracting situations. $150 for 6 weeks.

Graduates of FD2 or equivalent. Add significant distance, duration, and distractions to the Family Dog exercises. $150 for 6 weeks.

Introduction to Odor

Introduction to Odor This class continues where Introduction to Scenting leaves off. It is the second class in a series of four, any of which may be repeated until your dog meets the graduation criteria.

Your dog will be introduced to the first odor (Birch) used in searches. Dogs will be crated when they aren't working. Crates are provided when in the Pavilion, but you will need to bring your own crates for any outdoor or offsite searches. Pre-requisite is Introduction to Scenting. $150 for six week series.

Rally For Fun

Train and have fun with your dog! Rally obedience is a new dog obedience sport that encourages communication and a sense of teamwork between the dog and the handler. The dog/handler team navigate an obedience "course" together with an emphasis on accuracy and precision. Dogs must be comfortable in a crate or tied away from their handlers. The pre-requisite is Family Dog 2/Small Dog 2 and dog friendly dogs only, please. $150 for a six week series.

Recall Madness

Have you ever called your young (or old!)dog and he goes the other way? Recall, or "Come when called" training is vital to keeping your dog safe at the beach, in your yard, at the dog park or even around home. Come and enjoy some time with your dog while increasing the probability that your dog will come to you each and every time you call. $100 for four week series. Prerequisite - FD1 and dog friendly dogs.

Recalls on the Road

Work on your off leash recall out in the real world. This class is designed specifically to teach you tips and techniques to utilize the long line as a training tool to get a reliable off leash recall. The best place to practice is where you would hike! Come and join us in four different Marin locations to enjoy some realistic training environments. $100 for a four week series. Pre-requisite FD1 or SD1. Dog friendly dogs only.

Small Dog Socialization and Body Language

For graduates of SD1 or equivalent; dog friendly dogs only please. In this class, we will talk about appropriate play styles between dogs and how you can learn to read canine body language. We will also discuss the importance of fun human-dog interactions and how you can strengthen your bond with your dog through toys and play. Play time WILL be included in all sessions, if appropriate.

Small Dogs "Wanna Have Fun"

Using the small agility equipment and other fun obstacles, have fun with your dog while solidifying skills learned in other classes. Come and learn how to spice up your training routine with your little friends! For dogs 25 pounds and under, graduates of SD1/FD1 and dog friendly dogs only, please.

Street Smarts

Take your obedience show on the road! In this off site class we utilize the world's classroom to practice and proof exercises learned in our Family Dog obedience series. We also cover when, if and how it is appropriate to take your dog to outdoor coffee shops, malls and other public places. This class is open to dog friendly graduates of Family Dog 1. $100 for four week series.

Town & Trail

Graduates of Family Dog II or equivalent, dog-friendly-dogs only or with instructor approval. Practical manners for when your dog accompanies you around town, on trails, or in the open space. Class meets off campus at six different locations. $150 for the series.

Trail Manners

Join the fun with your dogs as we explore several different trails or multi-use pathways in Marin County. Our focus will be developing good trail manners; control of your dog on trails, how to meet oncoming dogs, long line work (step #1 to "off leash") and the ever popular "recall". Open to dog friendly graduates of Family Dog 2 or with instructor approval. $125 for five week session.

Two-fers

Are you owned by more than one dog? Is canine chaos a part of your daily routine? Walking multiple dogs a challenge? Try our Two-fers workshop which is designed to address training, management and exercise for the multiple dog household. Pre-requisite is Family Dog 1 for both dogs. Dog friendly dogs only. One handler, two dogs. $180 for the six week series

Working with Odor

This class is for dogs that have completed Introduction to Scenting and Introduction to Odor. It is the third class in a series of four, any of which may be repeated until your dog meets the graduation criteria.

It will focus on continued pairing with Birch to progress towards becoming odor obedient on this initial target odor. The class will continue to develop handler skills and will increase searching challenges. Hides will focus on all four search elements;Container, Interior, Vehicle, and Exterior searches which are required in a K9 Nose Work® NW1 Trial.

Additional target odors will be introduced for dogs that are proficient on Birch. Final test to graduate to Extreme Scenting is passage of ORT (Birch) conducted at the final class.
