Fix Your Pit for Free December 3 at the Marin Humane Society

Free doggy pick-up and delivery available

(NOVATO, CALIF., November 15, 2005) -- The Marin Humane Society will spay and neuter pit bulls and pit bull mixes of Marin residents for free on Saturday, December 3 as part of the Bay Area Pit Fix Day. More than 10 shelters around the Bay Area are currently taking appointments for the free surgeries with the goal of curbing the problem of pit bull overpopulation. As part of this special program, the Marin Humane Society will also provide free vaccines in advance, a free microchip and free transport as needed. The shelter is located at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato.

Pit bulls are a breed in crisis: Because of overbreeding and careless breeding, the pit bull population is increasing at a time when other breeds’ numbers are under control. Many Bay Area shelters consistently receive more pit bulls and pit bull mixes than they can adopt to new homes. Spaying and neutering pit bulls is vital to reducing this population to manageable numbers.

There are numerous benefits to fixing your pit: Spayed and neutered pit bulls are generally healthier, exhibit less aggression toward other dogs, are less likely to run away and won't contribute to the tragic pit bull overpopulation problem.

“A pit bull who is spayed or neutered will make a much better pet,” says Sheri Cardo, public information director, Marin Humane Society. “If you have an unfixed pit bull, give him or her an early holiday present and make an appointment for Pit Fix Day.”

Appointments must be made in advance. Each shelter has its own intake requirements. To participate in Marin, dogs must be healthy, five years or younger and vaccinated. To schedule, please call (415) 506-6270. Roundtrip transportation will be provided upon request.
