101 Adorable Animals Making Their Way to Marin to Find Homes in the Third Annual “Whiskers on Wheels” Rescue Event
Lifesaving Marin Humane Society Program Gives Lucky Dogs and Cats a Second Chance
(NOVATO, CALIF., January 7, 2004) More than 100 friendly dogs and cats from the Central Valley will soon be taking refuge at the Marin Humane Society while they await adoption to loving Bay Area families. In the Third Annual Whiskers on Wheels rescue event, taking place the weekend of January 1516, 2005, the Marin Humane Society will relieve the severely overcrowded Madera County animal shelter of all of its adoptable animals in order to provide them with a fresh start in the new year.
“This is the ultimate feel-good program because we are literally saving these animals lives when we load them into the vans to bring them to Marin,” says Diane Allevato, executive director of the Marin Humane Society. “To do Whiskers on Wheels takes an enormous amount of volunteer and staff energy, and yet we all look forward to it because we know the community will open their hearts and give them great homes.”
Marin Humane Society volunteers and staff will provide transportation, necessary medical care, food and shelter for each of the animals rescued from Madera. Starting around 1 pm on Saturday, January 15, the Whiskers on Wheels caravan will arrive at Madera County Animal Control (14269 Road 28, Madera, CA) and the selection process will begin and continue throughout the afternoon and evening. Sunday morning, January 16, the animals will be made comfortable in one of several vans for the long drive back to Marin, with arrivals staggered between 26 pm at the Marin Humane Society (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato, CA).
“We’re expecting a great variety of small dogs, large dogs, puppies, cats and kittens even purebred animals, so if you’ve been thinking of adding to your family, now is the time,” says Allevato. “Come to the Marin Humane Society and take home a new friend for life.”
After health and behavioral evaluations, and spay or neuter surgery, the Madera animals will be placed up for adoption at the Marin Humane Society starting mid-week. With the extra demands on the shelter, donations of blankets, towels, crates and cash are especially welcome and can be dropped off at the shelter at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd, Novato, CA 94949.

Whiskers on Wheels is a special event of the ongoing MHS Pet Partnership Program. The pioneering Pet Partnership Program of the Marin Humane Society transfers adoptable dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters to Marin to serve as part of a regional solution to the pet overpopulation problem. In Marin, there is a greater demand for companion animals than there are animals available. Since 1997, by partnering with dozens of overloaded shelters in Northern California and now Mexico the Marin Humane Society has taken in and found homes for more than 4,000 Pet Partnership animals.
