Marin Humane Society prepares to celebrate its centennial in 2007
(NOVATO, CALIF., April 11, 2006) - Next year, the Marin Humane Society will commemorate 100 years of innovatively protecting animals and setting high standards for shelters across the country to follow. In preparation for the celebrations to come, the Humane Society is asking Marin residents for help in locating historical material related to the organization’s early years.
While a search of local historical societies, libraries and the Humane Society’s own archives have turned up a wealth of information from post-World War II, photos, archival information, stories and anecdotes from 19071947 are still needed. Ethel B. Tompkins founded the Humane Society and George E. Hind served as president through many of the early years; it is hoped that family members of these individuals or the families of staff members from that time may have information or photographs to share. Stories about beloved pets of relatives who adopted from the shelter are also welcome.
“History has a way of folding back on itself,” says Diane Allevato, MHS executive director for the past 25 years. “We know that there are interesting stories to tell from the first 40 years we just have to find them.”
Anyone with information about the Marin Humane Society’s early years is invited to write to info@marinhumanesociety.org or to call (415) 506-6201.
