Barnes & Noble Bookfair to Benefit Marin Humane Society and Marin County Classrooms

(NOVATO, CALIF., August 23, 2005) — Reading is going to the dogs — and cats — in Marin County! From September 18–24 2005, a percentage of sales from books purchased with a special voucher at the Barnes & Noble in Larkspur (2020 Redwood Highway) will be donated to the Marin Humane Society. Donations will fund subscriptions to KIND News, a humane education publication distributed by the Marin Humane Society to 300 Marin County classrooms. At the time of purchase, customers must present the required Bookfair voucher; copies of the voucher are available at the shelter (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato), on the MHS Web site (www.marinhumanesociety.org) and at the Larkspur Barnes & Noble store the week of the event.

Published by the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education, KIND (Kids in Nature’s Defense) News has earned numerous awards for editorial and educational excellence. An integral part of the Marin Humane Society’s humane education program, KIND News emphasizes the importance of respect toward animals and helps children put basic values, like compassion and responsibility, into practice. Hundreds of Marin County teachers (and 35,000 educators nationwide) use KIND News to supplement their science, reading, writing and character education curriculums.

Maria Kaymen, Marin Humane Society humane education coordinator, emphasizes the need for the community to support this endeavor. “Through the distribution of KIND News, the Marin Humane Society brings important topics like spay/neuter, dog-bite prevention and responsible pet care to Marin County students,” she says. Citing a 2001 survey by the Humane Society of the United States, Kaymen notes that 9 out of 10 Americans support humane education as part of schools’ character education. “The Barnes & Noble Larkspur Bookfair is an excellent opportunity for members of the community to support lessons of kindness in the classroom.”

For every $30 raised from the Bookfair, a Marin County classroom will receive 32 copies of KIND News and a teacher’s guide each month of the school year.
