Marin Humane Society rescues “Copy” the cat from Novato storm drain

(NOVATO, CALIF., September 2, 2008) — It took nearly four hours and the assistance of a cable optic camera, but Copy the cat was safely rescued from a Novato storm drain and reunited with his guardian Lisa Hoytt Monday evening thanks to the patience and persistence of the Marin Humane Society, Novato Fire Department and Department of Public Works. Four-year-old Copy was frolicking in his guardian’s backyard on Windwalker Way in Novato when an excited neighborhood terrier chased the 12 pound feline down a storm drain.

MHS Animal Services Officer James Reis responded to the scene at 2pm, followed by Officers Dave Stapp and Adrienne Russo. The frightened feline was wedged approximately 20 feet from the six inch drain opening.

“Thanks to the DPW’s camera, we were able get an exact location of the kitty through all the sludge and rocks,” says Officer Stapp. “We gently nudged the cat with the camera until eventually one of the firemen – who had the longest reach – was able to turn him around and maneuver him to safety.”

“I don’t know how I can possibly say ‘thank you’ enough to the Marin Humane Society, said Hoytt. “Those officers will be getting Christmas presents from me for the next several years.”

“It was so great to see all the county departments working together,” said Officer Russo. “We were so happy to be able to reunite Copy with his guardian.”
