Young Veterinarians-In-Training "Camp Out" at the Marin Humane Society

Week-long Vet Camp Begins July 24

(NOVATO, CALIF., July 20, 2006) — (NOVATO, CALIF., July 20, 2006) ¾A select group of Bay Area teens have opted for a vocation vacation this summer: 12 lucky students will test-drive their dream job at the Marin Humane Society’s Second Annual Vet Camp. During the five-day camp, these aspiring veterinarians will receive an introduction to the field of veterinary medicine as they participate in academic and hands-on sessions taught by MHS faculty and field professionals. Vet Camp takes place from July 24–28, 9 am – noon on the MHS campus (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato).

The week will be chockfull of hands-on and educational experiences. First, campers will get a taste of shelter medicine (a growing part of the curriculum at many veterinary schools) as they assist animal care staff in the adoption center and clinic each morning. Guest speakers Dr. Sharon D. Gottfried of Veterinary Surgical Associates, Companion Parrot Connect Executive Director Coleen Doucette, and MHS Veterinarian Belinda Evans will address a variety of field topics in daily education sessions. Campers also will have the opportunity to study radiographs, practice injections and learn to how take a temperature, pulse and respiration in hands-on practicum. Vet Camp concludes on Friday, July 28 with a field trip to the UC-Davis Veterinary School of Medicine.

“Vet Camp is a unique opportunity for students who may be thinking of veterinary medicine as a profession to explore the field,” says MHS humane education coordinator Morgan Lance. “We tell all the campers to think of this experience as a week-long mini-college course.”
