On-site Humane Education Programs K-12
These two hour programs are designed for each grade level, Kindergarten through High School, and are keyed to the California State Science, Math, and Social Studies frameworks. All workshops include a tour of the shelter and a curriculum follow-up packet.
Fee: $20.00 donation per class
Kindergarten: Five Senses
A look at the way animals and people experience their world.
1st grade: Animal Care
Students learn how to take care of the animals in their lives.
2nd grade: Animal Families
Why are families so important to us and to animals?
3rd grade: Dogs: From Lobo to Labrador
How did we go from wild to Fido?
4th grade: Predator and Prey
A close look at predators and prey as pets.
5th grade: Scat!
All living things eat and poop. Find out how in this in-depth study of the digestive system.
6th-12th grade: Biodiversity and Evolution
See how diversity is needed to keep a population healthy and how living things must adapt to changing environments.
High School: Veterinary Medicine
Learn how animal care providers meet the emotional, mental, and physical needs of animals.

Outreach Humane Classroom Visits K-4
If you can’t make it to the shelter, why not have the shelter come to you? The Marin Humane Society’s Education Department offers a variety of presentations keyed to the California State Frameworks. Each visit includes a guest appearance by an animal ambassador from the Marin Humane Society and a curriculum follow-up packet.
Fee: $20.00 donation per visit.
“Playing It Safe With Dogs” - 30 minutes
K-3rd grade
Short video followed by a question and answer session on acting safely around dogs. Docent is accompanied by a SHARE tested dog. Each child receives a dog bite prevention coloring book.
“The Five Senses” 30 minutes
Kindergarten
Talks about a dog’s senses and teaches the concept of senses through interactive materials.
“Sharing Sam”: Pet Care - 30 minutes
1st grade
Tells the story, through the medium of a felt storyboard, of a stray dog being found, brought to the shelter, and adopted. Also covers basic needs of pets and how similar they are to ours.
“Animal Heroes”- 30 minutes
2nd grade
Focuses on people who have made a career of helping animals. Discusses ways children can become “animal heroes”.
“Living with Our Wild Neighbors” 45 minutes
4th grade
An introduction to wild predators and prey as well as predators and prey as pets using skulls, pictures, and activities.

Shelter Tour
A tour of the Marin Humane Society gives students a first-hand look at compassion in action! They learn about the needs of animals and the enormous amount of time and resources required to meet those needs. At the shelter, children will meet animals that are available for adoption and get to see what our staff and volunteers are doing to give them a bright new future. Tours last forty five minutes and include a curriculum follow-up packet.
Fee: $1.00 donation per participant.

Curriculum Resources
We have teaching kits covering a wide range of topics (endangered species, horses, cats, dogs, rainforest creatures, etc.) that are available for a loan period of a month. Our education center includes a research library that is open to teachers and students alike. The library features animal related books, magazines, videos, and Web site listings. We can assist teachers with curriculum development utilizing these resources. We also offer teacher workshops on incorporating humane education into the classroom via multi-thematic units.

KIND News
Marin County schools can take advantage of free subscriptions to the Humane Society of the United State's award winning publication, KIND News. The newsletters arrive every month, one for each student, along with a teacher suggestion page, and are grouped by grade levels: Primary (1st-2nd grades), Junior (3rd-4th grades), and Senior (5th-6th grades).
