Support The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act
September 2006:
H.R. 503, which calls for a permanent ban on the slaughter of horses in the United States for human consumption abroad, passed in the House of Representatives. The bill now has to pass the Senate, where a vote is pending.
Last year, Congress passed an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations Bill to stop horse slaughter during 2006. The amendment barred the use of taxpayer funds to inspect horses going to slaughter. Without inspections, slaughter plants cannot slaughter horses for human consumption.
But the U.S. Department of Agriculture has refused to implement this temporary ban on horse slaughter. Instead, the USDA will now pay to execute the inspections, thus circumventing the law. As a result, tens of thousands of horses will die.
The only permanent solution to end this cruel trade is passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This bill prohibits the transport of horses for slaughter here or abroad.
