Animal Services Officer
Full-Time, 40 hrs/wk. Starting Salary: $18.20 per hour. Benefits*
Accountability: Director of Animal Services

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Treat all animals humanely, properly and with compassion, including those that may be injured, wild or potentially dangerous
- Provide emergency rescue and transportation of sick and injured domestic and wild animals
- Enforce all laws pertaining to animals including complaints about aggressive animals, dog control, leash laws, neglect, licensing, cruelty, etc.
- Conduct regular patrols throughout an assigned area for animals at large, returning them to their guardian or transporting them to our shelter for impoundment
- Participate in rabies control by quarantining, impounding and releasing bite animals and rabies suspect animals
- Issue citations and appear in court when necessary
- Inspect commercial animal establishments
- Produce and maintain accurate case files, records and reports as required
- Clean, disinfect and restock vehicle and equipment
- Euthanize injured or sick wild animals for humane reasons in emergency situations
- Promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals through education and example
- Maintain a pleasant, courteous and tactful demeanor with the public at all times
- Removal of deceased animals
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure a positive public image, enhance the operation of the organization, and improve the quality of life for the animals
KNOWLEDGE OF, SKILL IN, OR ABILITY TO:
- Accumulated knowledge and compassion for domestic animals and wildlife
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and computer keyboarding skills (data entry) are required
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Must be flexible and capable of working both independently and as a member of a team
- Must be available to work irregular hours, weekends and holidays
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A typical way of gaining the necessary knowledge, skill and ability outlined above is: High School diploma or G.E.D. Completion of course on laws of arrest, search and seizure (832 P.C.) within six months of hire.
Possession of a valid California driver's license and a good driving record. Rabies Immunization required and will be provided by MHS.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- On occasion, the employee will be exposed to very unpleasant odors and gruesome sights.
- The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
- The work schedule will require working overtime, nightshift, swing shift, weekends and holiday and rotates regularly.
- The employee will sometimes be exposed to members of the public that can be confrontational, angry, emotional, and grieving.
- The employee will be required to work in a variety of terrain conditions, some of which can be potentially dangerous
- The employee will be exposed to dangerous and rabid animals
