The Marin Humane Society adoption dog kennels are 42 years old. These outdated facilities include chain-link fencing, narrow walkways, and high echoing ceilings, all of which create an unwelcoming atmosphere for our adoption dogs, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Project Rebuild launched in 2009 with the renovation of metal cat adoption housing to relieve cats from their old, cramped cages and allow potential adopters to see and greet them more easily in community cat rooms.

Project Rebuild is now focused on renovating our dog adoption kennels so that we can provide more comfortable housing for homeless dogs (more than 1,100 every year) during their stay with us, and present a more welcoming environment for potential adopters. We expect the work to begin in April 2011, and it is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

What the Renovation Entails
The renovation will reconfigure our existing kennel space with modern housing, wider walkways, and significantly improved soundproofing.

A main gallery will feature individual rooms for each dog. A planter feature will divide the main room, creating a visual barrier between the rooms and a more inviting environment for visitors. The planter will serve as storage for supplies and also provide temporary housing for the dogs while their rooms are cleaned. The second and third rooms will include several puppy/small dog kennels, and back to back runs for more flexibility.

The renovation will:

  • Increase our adoption dog housing capacity (from 18 to 22 runs)
  • Create a calmer, more comfortable environment for the dogs
  • Provide a safer work area for staff and volunteers: new kennels will no longer be fronted with open trench drains, nor have a 13-inch step over panel making entry/exit much easier; wider walkways will create more space for walking dogs; and insulation and sound proofing will ease everyone's ears.
  • Provide better viewing and get acquainted areas for the public

How you can help

Many of you generously supported Phase 1 of our fundraising campaign. In less than a year, we raised over $500,000 for the renovation effort. Now that we have selected the specific, state-of-the-art materials for the housing areas, contracted with the trades that will perform the work, and received complete ADA-compliance requirements from the City of Novato, our final project budget is set at $626,750. Phase 2 of our fundraising is now underway and we are happy to report that we have less than 15% left to raise. Phase 2 includes naming opportunities that will stand as legacies of compassion for decades to come.

We also anticipate hosting future fundraising events for this project. To discuss donation opportunities, please contact MHS Chief Development Officer Sheryl Cardoza at 415.506.6257 or SCardoza@MarinHumaneSociety.org
