Peaceable Kingdom: Special one-night screening at the Lark Theater

(NOVATO, CALIF., April 22, 2005) Hailed as “a masterpiece” by Dr. Jane Goodall, Peaceable Kingdom, a 70-minute award-winning documentary, highlights the struggles of ordinary people who arrive at a point in their lives where they have to follow their conscience, even though it means giving up their livelihood, their community, and all they were raised to believe and do. This inspiring story of courage, compassion, healing and hope will be shown for one night only at the Lark Theater (549 Magnolia Ave., Larkspur), Thursday, May 12 at 7:30 pm. A reception and discussion with Tribe of Heart filmmaker James LaVeck will follow the film. The event is co-sponsored by the Marin Humane Society.

At a time when the public is more concerned than ever about the health and environmental problems associated with large-scale factory farming, Peaceable Kingdom explores another angle of this unfolding story: the interconnected life journeys of farmed animals, former farmers and animal rescuers struggling against an out-of-control industrial system.

  • It’s about a fourth-generation Montana cattle rancher who experiences an epiphany during a health crisis and resolves to devote his life to undoing the damage done by his agribusiness empire.
  • It’s about a Michigan beef farmer whose childhood wounds are healed by the unexpected affection of a sanctuary cow.
  • And it’s about a young couple who stumble upon a massive injustice hidden away by the factory farming industry and provide sanctuary for rescued farm animals.

“Peaceable Kingdom is about striking a chord,” says LaVeck, “because it is about everyday people reclaiming their dignity and their innocence by challenging a blatant injustice. In a world that is drowning in cynicism and violence, it speaks to the potential for goodness in each of us.”
