They’re here!
140 rescued puppies, dogs and cats arrive at the Marin Humane Society in lifesaving “Whiskers on Wheels” event

Now they need good homes

(NOVATO, CALIF., January 17, 2004) A little confused, but none the worse for the 3-1/2 hour drive, 140 animals stepped out of crates and stretched their legs on Marin County turf Sunday afternoon. For these dogs and cats rescued from the overcrowded Madera County animal shelter and brought to the Marin Humane Society, the “Whiskers on Wheels” event offered renewed hope for finding a loving home.

Relieving the Madera shelter of all of its adoptable animals, Marin Humane Society staff and volunteers brought back 54 puppies, 45 adult dogs and 41 cats for adoption at its Novato facility.

“Our kennels are bursting at the seams with adorable animals,” says Diane Allevato, executive director. “We have a wide assortment of puppies, Border Collies, Labs, Aussies, German Shepherds, Chows, and every beautiful breed combination you can imagine. I’ve never seen such a delightful mix of dogs and cats.”

Each of the animals is currently being assessed for health and behavior and will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. The first Whiskers on Wheels animals are expected to be available for adoption beginning Wednesday, January 19, and a steady stream of new animals will become available daily over the next couple weeks.

Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit the shelter regularly (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato) or to call the humane society’s Adoption Hotline at (415) 506-6214. Additional adoption information can be found at www.MarinHumaneSociety.org.

“I want to thank the Marin community in advance for partnering with us in this rescue event,” says Allevato. “It’s the best feeling in the world to adopt a deserving animal who almost didn’t get the chance.”

With the extra demands on the shelter, donations of blankets, towels, crates and cash are especially welcome and can be dropped off at the shelter at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd, Novato, CA  94949.

Whiskers on Wheels is a special event of the ongoing MHS Pet Partnership Program. The pioneering Pet Partnership Program of the Marin Humane Society transfers adoptable dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters to Marin to serve as part of a regional solution to the pet overpopulation problem. In Marin, there is a greater demand for companion animals than there are animals available. Since 1997, by partnering with dozens of overloaded shelters in Northern California — and now Mexico — the Marin Humane Society has taken in and found homes for more than 4,000 Pet Partnership animals.
