Marin Humane Society To Host Celebration Of All Things Animal
Meet animals rescued from Hurricane Katrina, celebrate humanitarian award winners, cheer on dancing dogs, and more…
(NOVATO, CALIF., September 22, 2005) The Marin Humane Society (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato) will host “A Celebration Of All Things Animal” an open house event on Sunday, October 2, 2005. The event serves as an opportunity to highlight MHS’s recent accomplishments and thank the community for their support. The Celebration begins at 2pm with the premiere of Orphans of the Storm video featuring rescued animals from Hurricane Katrina, followed by an award ceremony for Teacher, Student and Humanitarian of the Year. Also scheduled are special appearances by Hennigan’s Spinning Frisbee K9s, MHS Dancing Paws and the Marin Unleashed! flyball team.
Several members of the community will be recognized for making outstanding contributions of kindness and dedication to the humane ethic:
The 2005 Humanitarian of the Year Award will be presented to Jill Robinson, founder and CEO of the Animals Asia Foundation, a Hong Kong based animal welfare agency. Animals Asia’s China Bear Rescue program has saved 185 Asian Moon bears from a lifetime of suffering on farms throughout China. Their sanctuary in Chengdu is a leader in captive bear housing and enrichment programs.
Laura Honda, the 2005 Madelon Tormanen Humane Teacher of the Year, works at Manor School in Fairfax. This school year, Laura and her students raised Steelhead trout and reintroduced them into Fairfax streams. Laura also participates in the Green Team, a student environmental group dedicated to recycling and removing trash to protect wildlife, and the Cornell Schoolyard Bird Watch program, which feeds and counts birds on school campuses.
The 2005 Helena & Anthony Franklin Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Youth will be awarded to 11-year-old Sammy Novick of Mill Valley. After learning about bear farming practices in China, Sammy decided to raise awareness and funds for the Animals Asia Foundation. Sammy collected more than 200 signatures on a petition to the Chinese Government to end bear farming before the 2008 Olympics and canvassed door to door in her neighborhood to raise more than $1,000 for AAF.
Those interested in attending this FREE event should RSVP to (415) 506-6293. Attendees are asked to leave their animal companions safely at home.
