Marin Humane Society saves injured deer in Tiburon

Arrow removed from shoulder of young buck

(NOVATO, CALIF. , April 1, 2009) — The Marin Humane Society rescued an injured deer with a hunting arrow embedded in its shoulder late Tuesday afternoon. An emergency wildlife response team including a staff veterinarian responded to the scene on Paradise Drive in Tiburon at approximately 3pm. A local resident alerted the Marin Humane Society after spotting the young buck resting in his fenced backyard.

After Lieutenant Steve Hill successfully tranquilized the deer, MHS veterinarian Belinda Evans was able to remove the arrow from the buck’s shoulder. “Thankfully, the arrow was stuck in muscle tissue without affecting any bone,” said Evans. Also on scene were Corporal Dave Stapp, Officer Gwen Fry and Director Kim Lanham-Snyder.

It is unknown whether the deer’s injury was a result of criminal activity. Anyone witnessing a poaching incident, or with information about such a violation, is encouraged to call the Department of Fish and Game at 1.888.DFG.CAPTIP.

The young buck was monitored overnight and remains in good condition. “He slept through the night and is now walking around,” said animal services director Captain Cindy Machado. “Thanks to the alertness of a local resident, and the skilled actions of our response team, we expect the deer to make a full recovery.”

As always, the public is encouraged to report any injured wildlife to the Marin Humane Society at 415.883.4621.
