Marin Humane Society offers flood relief for pets

Pet guardians urged to keep companion animals indoors during severe weather threat

(NOVATO, CALIF., January 3, 2008) - A series of storms is expected to hit the Bay Area over the next several days, bringing a potentially significant amount of rain and high winds. In anticipation of possible flooding, the Marin Humane Society is prepared to offer temporary emergency shelter for displaced animals. In the event of flooding or other natural disasters, dogs, cats and other companion animals may be brought to the shelter at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato for up to two weeks of free emergency board.

Emergency sheltering is offered on a space-available basis, and pet guardians who are unable to bring their animals in may call (415) 883-4621 for emergency assistance. Out-of-county pet guardians may also utilize the shelter’s emergency boarding service, but are encouraged to contact their local shelters first.

Pet guardians are strongly urged to keep their companion animals indoors. “With the threat of high winds, cold temperatures and flooding, the safest place for your pets is inside,” says MHS animal services director Captain Cindy Machado.

Should pets become lost during storms or disasters, a LOST REPORT should be filed immediately with the local animal shelter. In the event that a stray animal is found, a FOUND REPORT should be filed with the local shelter. If a stray animal cannot be temporarily housed by the finder, the animal should be transported to the nearest shelter as soon as possible.

The Marin Humane Society also encourages guardians to ensure that pets are microchipped or wearing current I.D. tags at all times that include your address and telephone information. Microchips and I.D. tags may be obtained from the Marin Humane Society Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
