Marin Humane Society Centennial Speaker Series:
Last Journey for the Leatherback Sea Turtle

Learn about destructive fishing practices that threaten survival of ancient ocean dwellers

(NOVATO, CALIF., August 3, 2007) - Scientists warn that the giant Pacific leatherback sea turtle, which has inhabited the oceans for more than 100 million years, may become extinct in the next decade if current threats from industrialized fishing practices are not curtailed. Karen Steele of the Marin-based Sea Turtle Restoration Project will present “Last Journey for the Leatherback Sea Turtle” at the Marin Humane Society (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato) on Thursday, August 23 at 7 p.m. This event, part of the MHS Centennial Speaker Series, is open to the public and free of charge.

The presentation will begin with a 30-minute documentary that portrays the beauty and uniqueness of the Pacific leatherback, and highlights the human impacts threatening this largest species of sea turtle. The film will be followed by a talk focusing on the leatherbacks that visit the coast of California, including Marin County, and successful strategies for reducing the harmful impacts on this species.

“In just over the last two decades, Pacific leatherback populations have fallen by 95 percent,” says Steele. “The Sea Turtle Restoration Project is committed to preventing further devastation to sea turtles and ocean ecosystems by campaigning for significant reforms in current destructive fishing practices.”

This event is free to the public. Because space is limited, reservations are requested. For more information and to RSVP, please call (415) 506-6256 or write loveanimals@marinhumanesociety.org.

The MHS Centennial Speaker Series is bringing to Marin from around the country distinguished experts on contemporary topics concerning wildlife and farmed animals. Along with Karen Steele, upcoming speakers include “Mad Cowboy” Howard Lyman on factory farming, Dr. Nathan Varley on the wolves of Yellowstone, and more.
