Marin Humane Society volunteers have the highly rewarding opportunity to learn about and contribute to the welfare of animals and to work with people in our community. Over 600 volunteers help with everything from walking dogs, socializing cats, cleaning kennels, helping at special events, finding forever homes for the shelter animals and much more. Join our family and share in our amazing success!

We welcome adults (18 years and older) who would like to volunteer their time and who are interested in making a difference. We ask for a one-year commitment of at least two to four hours a week per job. There is an orientation session that includes an introduction to the services and philosophy of the Marin Humane Society, a discussion of current volunteer opportunities and a tour. Volunteer orientations are held monthly and pre-registration is required. There is no obligation to commit to a volunteer job to attend a general volunteer orientation.

The steps to become a volunteer at MHS are as follows:

  1. Complete the volunteer application.
  2. Once your application has been received and reviewed, the Volunteer Services Department will invite you to attend next available general volunteer orientation.
  3. After you have attended the general orientation, you will receive an email with a link to the Volunteer Store. This is the site where you will perform the following:

    * Complete the Volunteer Materials fee payment page: There is a $25 Volunteer Materials fee. This fee allows the Marin Humane Society to provide you a volunteer t-shirt, badge, lanyard, training and general training materials without taking any money away from the support of the animals in our care.

    * Provide your Volunteer Follow-Up Information and Areas of Volunteer Interest Form.

    * By completing the transaction in the Volunteer Store, you agree to the following: Volunteer Policies & Procedures, Volunteer Benefits & Bill of RightsWaiver & Release, and the non-refundable $25 volunteer materials fee.

Please Note: You must be 18 years or older to become a volunteer and be ready to commit to two to four hours per week for a minimum of one year.

Volunteer opportunities for those under age 18 include our animal services clubs for middle and high school students and internships for high school students. Please contact the Education department or call 415.506.6288 Student Opportunities page.

Please contact our Volunteer department if you have any questions.
